Under the Light of a Thousand Stars

A queer Young Adult romance exploring a getaway, a wide-open sky, two boys, and countless things to say. One keeps it in, one lets it out - but sometimes, secret thoughts can’t stay secret, and words dry up in our throats. Will they grow together or get lost like stars on the horizon?

Luke Wright and Sam Hanson. Long-time bestfriends, fresh high school graduates, about to head off to their own lives. What better way to celebrate than a final trip before college? Or at least that’s what Luke thought. When the big plan starts to fall apart, he and Sam resolve to make the most of it still, all the way up and down the west coast. Luke’s sure this will all work out. Maybe.

Sam’s only problem is he’s not sure if he can tell Luke how he feels about … well, everything. Especially since this might be his last chance before they go off on their own. He can’t lose his bestfriend over a crush, right? He can get through this trip without doing something stupid, right?

Some stories just find a way to be told. The story idea of Under the Light of a Thousand Stars started as a fanfiction years ago that I was writing and sharing with other writing friends. Since then, it became its own standalone piece, and it has developed to explore the ways that secrets don’t want to be hidden, the ways that emotions we think we can handle keeping bottled might escape us.

“Yeah.” Luke’s only response. It was shaky, as if he were about to cry or burst into laughter. It was simple, the way he answered when he was unsure of how to turn the highway of words inside him into anything else. Simple, yet it held so much—like it held the stars above them, the pleasant chill of the air, the moss that covered everything.

Like it held this moment of time under the light of a thousand stars, burning and eternities away but still here.
